BRONX, NY, Sept. 12-

The Evelina Antonetty Centennial Celebration is launching a citywide voter registration campaign today, at least 19 locations across The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island on the first day of the week-long program.

At least 11 CUNY schools, and additional social justice and cooperative housing organizations will host a table with coalition members including , APREE (Alliance for Puerto Rican Education and Empowerment), Black Men Build Initiatives Manager, NYC Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety/CSI Liberty Partnerships Program, Unite Here Local 100 and NYPIRG (New York Public Interest Research Group).

The campaign will provide the public with the opportunity to register to vote, information on the specific poll sites where they will  vote in November, along with a bio of EVelina Antonetty, one of the most impactful activists of the Puerto Rican diaspora of the 20th century. Antonetty was a champion for women, minorities and voting rights– all still at the forefront of city and U.S. political and social justice struggle today.

“I am extremely pleased to acknowledge the contributions of all the participants that are making this effort possible citywide,” says Prof. Lizette Colón, who is coordinating the Voter Registration campaign on behalf of the E100 Committee. “This  event will be another way to honor Evelina Antonetty’s legacy and constant goals : to always organize, build coalitions in the process  and serve well our people and our communities with total and true commitment.  We have been able to galvanize  participation of community organizations such as APREE, Nos Quedamos, Taino Towers, Casita Maria, Chelsea Rising/ L.EA.P.S., Black Male Initiative, P.I.S.T. , union representatives from PSC and Unite Here Local 100 as well as NYPIRG chapters throughout CUNY. The moment we reached out to all the representatives in the participating community organizations, who knew about Evelina’s legacy,  they said right away “Presente”.

When asked one of our collaborators in this effort about why they have decided to participate , Dr. Luz Delgado from APREE ( Alliance for Puerto Rican Education & Empowerment) stated the following :

“We celebrate Evelina Antonetty’s commitment to the development of grassroots community organizations dedicated to educational reforms and her inspiration to countless Puerto Rican youths,” says Dr. Luz Delgado of APREE, a coalition member.” We hope that Evelina’s example can be an inspiration to become involved in activities that uplift and inspire others using our talents to create a more just and equitable society.”
