SUMMARY:Images of Evelina: A Conversation with the Artists and Elba Cabrera\, 'La Madrina de las Artes' (In-person by invite only)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI).The Evelina 100 committee\, in collaboration with CCCADI\, is thrilled to bring together the event Images of Evelina: A Conversation with the Artists and Elba Cabrera\, ‘La Madrina de las Artes’ at the CCCADI Firehouse. While this September 18th event is by invite-only\, we are pleased to share that a virtual presentation of this talk will air for public viewing on October 3\, 2022! Stay tuned to watch via Facebook\, Youtube and the event page. In the meantime\, take a look at CCCADI’s digital exhibition\, Images of Evelina. This virtual exhibition consists of ten portraits by contemporary artists who were asked to produce new work depicting Evelina Antonetty\, one of the most effective and impactful leaders of the Puerto Rican diaspora of the twentieth century. Images of Evelina is a program of Evelina 100\, Celebrating the Life and Times of Evelina Antonetty in observance of her centennial (1922-2022). \n\n\n\nThese artists had a professional or personal relationship with Antonetty or they have been long-time admirers of her and her work. In selecting the artists\, the organizers of Evelina 100 strived to include a collective of artists with different styles and sensibilities. \n\n\n\nThe paintings run the gamut of straightforward portraiture to representations with ethereal\, highly symbolic imagery that reference Antonetty’s Puerto Rican ancestry\, her experience as an immigrant\, her role as a pioneer of the early Puerto Rican community in New York City and her distinguished career as an activist and champion of urban America. \n\n\n\nParticipating Artists: Antonio Martorell\, Marcos Dimas\, María Domínguez\, Siuko García\, Rudy Gutiérrez\, Sara Morales\, Esther Pagán\, Nitza Tufiño\, Manuel Vega and Simon Lind.Moderator: Melba Olmeda \n\n\n\nEvelina in Verse IV: A Poetry readingKarina G. SUMMARY:Stage Reading of Excerpts from 'Evelina's Heart'
DESCRIPTION:Actor\, director\, and writer Sandra Nía Rodríguez \nDownload the full Commemorative Program here (PDF) \nThe play–Evelina’s Heart–was originally produced by Latino Experimental Fantastic Theater (LEFT) under the leadership of Leticia Rodríguez and directed by Gloria Zelaya. It premiered in 1997\, followed by performances in several New York City stages\, culminating with a gala performance at Hostos Center for the Arts. The Centennial reading\, directed by Angel Morales\, Director of the Hostos Repertory Company\, will feature some original music composed by Rodríguez with musical arrangements by Javier (Javo) Grant Bassat. \n“When I was asked if I would perform Evelina’s Heart for the Centennial\, I was honored\, especially because I didn’t think anyone would remember the play after twenty five years\,” says Rodríguez. “But Elba\, Evelina’s sister\, even quoted a line from the play in our meeting. I still remember it. ‘God a woman… Of course she had to be a woman!’” \nRodríguez has been selected as one of the writers for the Puerto Rican Literature Project led by Poet Laureate Raquel Salas Rivera. Next December she will be presenting her poetry along with fourteen other Puerto Rican poets at the Whitney Museum as part of the exhibition There is no post-hurricane world: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria. \nThe Centennial reading will feature music composed by Rodríguez with musical arrangements by Javier (Javo) Grant Bassat. \nDownload Event Flyer \n  \n  \n  \n
