5PM | Fort Apache Band Revisited BMHC Plaza, 438 E. 163rd Street
Featuring Bobby Sanabria & Abure’ performing the music of the Fort Apache Band to recognize the role of arts & culture in resistance.
The BMHC will present a day-long program focusing on the movie Fort Apache, The Bronx, and the sites evoked in the title. The precinct which used this nickname in the Bronx and the historical Fort Apache in the U.S. west are both symbolic of the emergence of empire through the U.S. dealings with Native Americans and the island of Puerto Rico. This program will honor Evelina’s work in the Fort Apache protests with the Community Against Fort Apache (CAFA) as well as her political beliefs as an Independentista. The program will include: George Stonefish, Nadema Agard (artist), David Bunn Martine (AMERINDA), Dr. Charles Venator-Santiago (Univ. of CT), Lourdes Torres and Joe Conzo Jr. Evening concert with Bobby Sanabria & Abure’ will pay tribute to the Fort Apache band and its founders, Jerry and Andy Gonzalez, who worked with CAFA to recognize the role of arts & culture in resistance
